In the article “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”, the author, Amy Chua, explains how Chinese children often are more successful in their life compared to Western children. She compares and explains the two different ways of raising children through stories and from her own life.
Chua traveled to the United States of America with her parents when she was around 1 year old. She is now married and has two pretty daughters, Louisa and Sophia. She has a Western background but chooses to raise her two daughters with rules and certain restrictions; this comes from her Chinese heritage and is with good intention, thus raising her kids with a harder tone. Chua says that all Western mothers think that kids needs to find out by themselves that learning will only help them not harm them.
Analysis
In the beginning of the text we are being told that the writer, Amy Chua is a professor at Yale Law School and that she has two beautiful daughters. We also hear that she identifies herself as a “Chinese mother” (l.22). Chinese mothers aren’t necessarily Chinese it is just a term to describe a very strict mother or father with different methods of educating their children. Chinese mothers’ contrast with the “Western parent” (l.25), very focused on their child’s education, academic level and behavior therefore they devote a lot of time to educate their child, compared to Western parents who are sometimes more loose and forgiving.
