The short story is about a young woman getting her grandfather's car and living and enjoying her teen years. Not only does the car represent the motion in life but the car becomes a very important part of the main character's life.

The non-?ction text by Marina Keegan describes a woman with a special relationship with her Toyota Camry, a very meaningful gift she recieves from her grandmother after her grandfather passed away right before her 16th birthday. The car quickly becomes a very signi?cant part of the speaker’s life, she begins to spend a lot of time in the car. The car is where she experiences her ?rst kiss, a place that reminds her of her ?rst heartbreak and breakup with her ?rst boyfriend, a place she spends a lot of time with her friends smoking marijuana and even a place that reminds her of all of the parking tickets she has collected during her 3 years with the car. As the speaker cleans the care as she prepares to head off to go to college she begins to reminisce on all of the memories and becomes nostalgic, because she realizes this very car holds most of her high-school years, so before handing the car keys to her younger brother she decides to spend one last evening listening to Frank Sinatra the same way she did when her grandmother passed the car to her 3 years earlier.

When the speaker found out she was receiving the car as a gift she felt a little guilty as the car was the nicer one of the two cars her grandparents owned together. Either way she got the keys and her relationship to the car soon became a very important period of her life. “He was eighty-six and it had been long expected, yet I still felt a guilty unease when I heard the now surplus car would soon belong to me. For my grandmother, it was a symbolic goodbye. She needed to see only one car in her garage –
