Scientists claim that people working out develop Alzheimer´s and other sedentary folks later, than people who don’t work out. They claim that vigorous exercise can cause older nerves to from dense that make the brain run faster and more efficiently. For decades scientists have believed that growing back new nerve cells by working out was impossible.

The process starts in the muscles. Every time a muscle contracts and releases, it sends out chemicals that travel through the bloodstream and into the brain. One of the chemicals is the protein IGF-1 and when it reaches the brain it starts the neurotransmitter factory. It orders to brain to ramp of the production of several chemicals, including brainderived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

With regular exercise the body builds up its level of BDNF and the brain´s nerve cells start communicating with each other in new ways.

This is the process that underlies learning and BDNF makes the process possible. Brains with more BNDF have more capacity for knowledge, and brains that´s low on BNDF shuts itself off to a new any new information, making it hard to learn. Most people maintain their level of BNDF throughout adulthood, but as they age, their individual neuron slowly starts to die. Animal studies the last decade shows that some parts of the brain can be induced easily with exercise.
