Every year, people in the Capitol and the 12 Districts celebrate the Hunger Games, which is an event where two tributes, male and female, from every District must go to arena and fight until there is one survivor.
Katniss Everdeen, who tells her story in the first person wakes up one night and notices that her sister is not by her side, but she is tucked in with their mother across the room. She is aware that this is the day of the reaping, which is the first step of the Hunger Games. Katniss decides to go hunting, and starts by introducing the reader to the surroundings. Katniss and her family live in a troubled society built on ruins. Specifically, they live in the Seam, which is a part of District 12. The Seam is at the edge of the District, which is enclosed by a high fence, and Katniss often crawls under to hunt. Her father taught her this before he died in a mine explosion. Katniss were eleven years old, when this happened. When she hunts she uses the bow her dad made. Most people she mentions in first chapter doesn’t have enough food.
