In 1619 the first slaves are brought from Africa to Jamestown, Virgina. If they wanted to be free, they had to work their way out. I had the opportunity to interview a girl named Sam who had a very bad experience as a slave in the early 1850’s.
“So, can you tell me what happened to you?”
“I was eighteen years old. I was in a room at my master’s house, it was a little room where I sew clothes, then suddenly my dad came, he did not notice me, so he went out and locked the door. I had no choice but to kick the door down to get out. Then I came across the overseer, he asked me what had happened, and I tried to explain, but he did not believe me. He asked me to tell the story again truthfully without lying. I was confused as what to say because what I had just explained was the truth. So, I replied, “sir I am telling the truth, you have to believe me. My dad didn’t notice me, so he locked the door and I couldn’t get out”. This time the overseer jumped off his horse and asked me the same question again. I replied like I did the other times, but this time he took his whip and whipped me right across my back, I tried not to cry because I was afraid to be punished for that too. Since I was eight years old, I have worked for the same master for over 10 years, and he has not shown mercy once.
