Chance the mystery Gardener. The man who does not “exist”. No birth certificate, and no evidence of him exist on this earth.
He lives in the old Man’s house where he was found abandoned as a baby. He takes care and tends the garden every day. He has done that for as long as he can remember. Chance is considered to be very handsome, with broad shoulders, narrow hips, and long legs. His age is never mentioned in the novel, but Chance says that he has been in the house since before television, so he is probably between thirty – fifty years old. Chance wear expensive suits, ties, and shoes that once belonged to the Old man. He has never been outside the garden and has no relation with the outside world besides what he sees in the television and radio. Chance is a simple man and talks mostly about gardening. His singular perspective on the world makes him a magnetic source of wisdom for everyone he encounters. Even though he has no relation to the outside world, his life turns 180 degrees. Chance the simple minded who only knew about gardening, became suddenly political adviser even though he can’t read or write. Chance has developed a lot in the novel, he goes from being nothing to be the centre of everyone’s attention. At the beginning he did not talk to many people on daily basic, only the maid and Old Man. It was not long conversations but short conversation about the important things. Now he has gotten better at interacting with other people, and make chooses himself
