The 32-year-old Laura Chappell (Carey Mulligan) is destined to get married and have kids so when Henry McAllan (Jason Clarke) shows up at her family’s house she is instant to take with him, soon to found out that her brother-in-law Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) is the handsome and charming one. Years After 1941 Henry McAllan moves his wife Laura and their two girls to Mississippi on his father’s cotton farm. Henry is only paying attention to his work on the farm that he loves. That he doesn’t see that Laura struggles to raise their family on the foreign farm with no inside plumping our electricity, with the eyes of her despicable and racist father-in-law Pappy (Jonathan Banks) on her.
The Jackson family has worked on the farm as slaves for generations. Hap Jackson (Rob Morgan) who is the family father has dreamed of them owning their own land. His wife Florence Jackson (Mary J Blinge) has an open perspective of her kid’s future. Through the film we see both the Jackson and McAllan learn of each other’s differences and Florence is taking care of Laura and her girls when Hap breaks his leg working in the marks.
