Analyse af Morris Luries novelle 'The Larder'

The most debated issue in the world today is excessive consumption. It is a very serious and important topic, that everyone should be focused on. Sometimes we buy and spend more than we need without actually thinking about what the consequences of our actions are. People don’t think about how we can protect and maintain the nature. We take things forgiven and throw things out if we don’t want it anymore. We are throwing trash and other things out in the nature without thinking that one day, the nature might not be here anymore.

“The Larder” is a short story written by Morris Lurie. In the short story “The Larder” Morris Lurie is shedding light to the topic consisting of human actions against the planet, nature and the creatures living on it. The short story is telling us how dangerous it actually is not to be bothered about our planet, and how one day there will not be one anymore, if we proceed the same way as we do now. How we as mankind is completely selfish of our actions against our own planet.

The short story “The Larder” is about a group of tourists that have returned from a boat trip to the Great Barrier Reef. The tourists are entertained by the creatures in the sea and by fishing. By the reef there are some beautiful, silk-smooth shells that all of the tourists find beautiful and fascinating. The tourists would like to take the shells home as a souvenir, even though there are creatures inside of the shells. The people want to take the shells back home with them even though creatures are living inside the shelles, the people are trying to take the creatures out so they can have the shells taking home with them. This happens over and over, when another groups of tourists comes the same place. The nature and the planet takes the damage only so mankind can have their souvenir.
