The characters are consumed by a view of helpfulness, and the story is about to have a new start in life.

The story ”Last Bridge Burned” is all about the main character Carlyle. Carlyle is a very helpful man, he helped this woman, we can see that on p.2 l. 72 “Carlyle went out on the porch, keeping the door open so he’d hear if she woke.” He says to her that she can sleep in the shop, and he will keep the door open so he can hear her.

Carlyle is a person like everyone else, but he did not throw her out of the shop, he let her in and sleep in the closed shop, though there was money, whiskey, a radio and so on in the shop p. 2 l. 81 “He’d leave the door unlocked, and if she took a few things, a coffeepot, or the radio, a grocery bag stuffed with goods, so what.” He says in these lines that it does not mean anything to him if she took something from the shop, he just wants to help her.
