In life, there are sometimes experiences that can change us in a major way. Experiences that completely change our values, our perspective, or even our sense of self. These are few and far In between and that’s why we cherish them so much. In the Movie, Stand by Me, we see how one experience completely changes a person, and turn his weaknesses into his strengths.

For Gordie, one of these experiences was the time he and his friends, decided to search for a body. Throughout this trip, everybody’s character was on full display. This is especially true for Gordie. He is a very quiet and timid kid, and he feels unwanted. Even invisible at times. Every time we get an insight into his family life, it is very clear that his parents do not hold him in the same regard as his brother. “It should have been you.” His father told him in a disheartened tone at his son's funeral. He was filled with grief after the passing of his brother, however, Chris’s support made him gain the perspective. The perspective is that his sadness and grief, was not stemming from himself, but his father’s neglect and personal issues. For if his family showed him the love he deserved, he would not be emotionally scarred. The emphasis of the nightmare is also placed on his father, rather than his brother. This constant reminder of inferiority might have been the reason he is so shy. Why bother saying anything if whatever you say is invalid and unimportant anyway? When one’s parents are too stuck in the past, you will feel swept under the rug. That is why Chris almost takes a fatherly role in the movie, pushing Geordie to take advantage of his gifts, and taking every opportunity he gets. The scene in mind is the scene where Chris got upset that Geordie said he did not care about writing. Although he is very timid, he is still one of the most actionable and dependable characters in the group. When people need him the most he will be there. A great example would be on the bridge. The train came rumbling from behind them. It would have been easy for Gordie to just run, but he did everything to get Vern with him. In the last scene, he even pulls a gun out to protect his friends. A fun note to add would be the fact that he was terrified of shooting the gun earlier in the movie. Just pulling the trigger on an empty barrel was very overwhelming for him. This shows a lot of his development in Geordie. Geordie gets tougher. He is someone who you can trust and respect. He is also devoted and when he makes up his mind about something, it is going to get done. He even said, “if everyone went back, I would continue.” The deer also symbolizes devotion.
