Today, more of the younger generation begins to feel cultural division, in relation to their culture. The short story “Chameleon”, Ranbir Sahota invites us to the daily life for the main character Rita. Rita is afraid to tell her parents about her white boyfriend Mark because of her religion. Her parents are very strict and want Rita to find an Indian boyfriend, that will take care of her, and not will leave her like all “whiteboys” do. Cultural division is the main theme of the story because Rita is trapped between two cultures. Rita and her boyfriend Mark, comes from two different cultures, where they feel separated in relation to their culture.
Rita is a 24-year-old woman and caught between two cultures. Rita and her family are natively Indian, and now live in England. Rita sees herself as a well-integrated foreigner in the English culture.
Rita hates her skin-color, you see this when she says, “Instead of moisturizer, I applied Fair and Beautiful bleaching cream...” (p. 1), where this example shows us, that Rita wants to be white.
Rita tries to be conscientious and listen to her parents in their conversation, but eventually Rita is determined, when she says” Mum I’m not ready. I’ll get married to whoever I want, whenever I want”. (p. 4) This shows that she won’t listen to her parents’ traditions, regarding marriage.
