Life can be difficult for people who doesn’t fit in. for newcomers in countries, this is often the case. They are instantly rejected by society, and gets thrown into areas, where they culture gets recognized by similar people and therefor these different cultures never meet. This concept is explored by Ranbir Sahota in the short story “Chameleon” from 2003. The shows the readers the difficulties of moving into a new area.

Rita patel, a young Indian woman, living home with her very cultural and traditional parents. Rita faces the problems of not fitting in the society she lives In and fixes with mimicry the people she surrounds herself with, who are white. She faces the problems of unattainable love, unattainable because her boyfriends’ mother, doesn’t want her son to marry an Indian non catholic girl, and her own parents not wanting her to marry a white boy. Her boyfriend mark breaks up with her due to these issues and Rita gets in a very familiar and long discussion with her mother about, marriage, this time she chooses not to let it go, but instead to keep and discussing with her mother, to the point where Rita takes the car and leaves her family behind
