Rahnbir Sohotas novelle “Chameleon” is based on an impossible love story between Mark, a white catholic boy, and Rita, an Indian girl fostered by a very religious and traditional Indian family.
Rita is a girl living like a Chameleon. When she is not trying to be white, she is trying to be as Indian as possible. Her secret boyfriend Mark is raised catholic, and is as forbidden to be with Rita, as Rita is to Mark. Their two religions are just too diverse.
Their relationship is a secret only known by themselves. Together they live in an apartment, where each of their family thinks that they are living by themselves individually.
One day, Rita’s parents, think it is time to search for a qualified Indian husband for Rita. She avoids telling Mark about the possible upcoming arranged marriage.
Time goes by, and one day, it is time to meet the chosen suitor, Mrs. Methi’s nephew. The meeting starts off a bit awkward, but a convection in the kitchen between the two, reveals that Mrs. Methi’s nephew maybe isn’t as unknown as Rita thought.
Rita’s parents are coming on an unannounced visit to “Rita’s” apartment. Mark hides in a closet, while hearing a conversation about a possible marriage, and Rita’s suitor.
