Chameleon: The End

Downstairs, I opened the door. “Mom, dad, I’d like you to meet someone”. They turned and looked surprised at her. My mom was looking really confused and said, “what is going on here?” I called for mark and he came downstairs. “Mom, Dad, this is Mark. He’s my boyfriend. We’ve been living here together for awhile”. At first they just stared at us, looking really confused but then their faces quickly turned to disbelief and my dad’s eyes looked extremely angry with me. I was starting to regret my decision about telling them about Mark and me. What if they never wanted to see me again? My dad started yelling, “we knew it, why didn’t you tell us? Why would you do this to us? You have brought shame on us. What will people think? You are an awful daughter.” My mom was crying a lot. I told them how awfully sorry I was, and that I didn’t mean to bring shame on them, but that I couldn’t marry an Indian man. My dad said, “ We will not be talking to you again. You can live with this white boy and get fatherless children.” Then they turned around and left… I fell to the ground and started crying. Mark sat next to me holding my hand and telling me how much he loved me. I really hoped Marks parents would accept us being together. After talking to my parents I just went straight to bed. When I woke up the next morning, Mark had made breakfast for me. He told me that after I went to bed, he had called his mom and told her about us. She had said that if being with me would make him happy, then he should be with me. I was so relief, but also really nervous that Marks parents wouldn’t like me. After finishing the breakfast, Mark told me that we were going out to eat lunch. I went to take a shower and I put on my new summer dress. Mark and I went to a really fancy restaurant by the river. It was a really nice day. The sun was shining and it was pretty hot outside. When we got to dessert, Mark suddenly sat down on his knee next to me. He said “Rita I really love you with all of my heart and I want us to be together for the rest of the life. Will you do me the honor of marrying me?” I was pretty surprised. I hadn’t expected him to propose to me, but of course I wanted to marry him.
