Analyse af Shirley Watsons 'Eccles Cakes'

Sometimes I wonder if people, especially children, feel like they don’t want to go home, despite all the love and solicitude you get from home as a child. Can it be too much? It can be tempting to just go out in the world, even though there are a lot of dangers out there. However, my question is can the pressure and affection from home be considered to be too much? Some parents are too possessive when it comes to their children and loved ones, as well it’s a clear factor in this novella.

“Eccles Cakes” by Shirley Watson is a novel about the fifteen-year-old boy Eddie. Eddie had an errand at the pastry shop in town and therefore he is on his way back home. He sits on a bench at Waterloo station in London and waits for his train to arrive. Eddie sits while he reflects on his life, and suddenly a woman encounters him. The woman Angie is very kind, and she decides to sit down and have a casual conversation with Eddie. She tries to break the ice with some normal questions, but Eddie gets uncomfortable, and it ends up being Angie doing most of the talking. They talk for a while about Eddie and his relationship with his mother and some of the incident’s things that happened in Eddie's life. Shortly after the last train arrives and Angie goes on while Eddie stays back at the station in Waterloo.
