The article “How my view on gay marriage changed” by David Blankenhorn is an article about David Blankenhorn’s change of view on gay marriage and how he is a marriage advocate. Back when the article was written same-sex marriage in the USA wasn’t legal, it first became legal in December 2012. He has changed his views, but can the rest of the world do the same?

To start, it is important to keep in mind that most of Blankenhorn’s beliefs have not changed, they have only adapted to a new reality. He highlights the fact that he’s not a same-sex advocate but just a “marriage advocate” (p. 1, L.3) in general. In his article, it is sensual that he tries to open up about how he used to think about same-sex marriage as a bad thing whereas now he thinks completely differently and wants other people to change their views too, because if he can change then so can the rest.

The reason why most people are opposed to gay marriage is the fear that children could not benefit from a non-traditional marriage or union, David Blankenhorn had the same fear “I opposed gay marriage believing that children have the right insofar as society makes it possible, to know and to be cared for by the two parents who brought them into this world” (p.1, L. 9-10) but he changed his mind and after saw that same-sex marriage could be beneficial for children.
