When I was five years old, and my brother was on his Rumspringa, I always kind of envied him. I was one of the few small children around that actually wanted to see the world. Experience it, for all its good and evil. I didn’t want to judge it, or the people in it, but I wanted to satisfy myself by exploring new sights, smells and taste. And although I always had that desire, I always had to remind myself what was probably more important, my family, the Amish community and God.
But know that I actually sat there, on the train to Miami, to start off my Rumspringa, I felt free, and the only way to be a hundred percent free, is to be open-minded, be ready for new challenges, new people and a new life. So there I was, open-minded.
I had a rather unusual Rumspringa, I wanted to get some distance, so therefore I lived in Miami in a room, that I rented. The light didn’t scatter in, there would only be one strong smell in the room that I can only describe as old and used socks. The landlord was very nice though, he was an old man in his 70’s. He was living alone after his daughter moved out.
