The film is about a black man named Solomon Northup. In the very start he takes a walk in the park and one of his friends introduce him to two men. These men tell him that they have a circus where he could get money for performing with his violin.

He says yes and it goes good for a little time. But after a good performance they go out for some food and Solomon gets very drunk. When his work friends have putt him to bed, the movie skips to when Solomon wakes up in a cell.

Solomon freaks out and then a guy comes in, then Solomon starts to talk to him, they guy tells him he is a slave, and his name is Platt. Solomon keeps saying his name isn’t Platt and he isn’t a slave, the guy doesn’t like that and starts betting him until his tree bat smashes. Solomon goes on a ship where he is sold afterwards. He gets sold to a surprisingly sweet slave buyer named William Ford. The guy that buys Solomon doesn’t like that a black woman is losing her children and offers to buy them but isn’t allowed.
