The movie is based on a true story, about the free African-American man named Salomon Northup who was working as a violinist. Two men offered Salomon a two-week job as a musician if he would travel to Washington, D.C. with them. Once there, they drug Northup and deliver him to a slave dealer.
Salomon was shipped along the other slaves who also had been caught.
At the end of the shipping Salomon got told of one of the slave traders that he should change his identity. He got the name ‘Platt’, a were told to say that he was a runaway slave from Georgia.
Salomon got sold to a plantation owner named William Ford. Salomon impresses William, because he engineers a waterway for transporting logs swiftly and cost-effectively across a swamp, and Ford presents him with a violin in gratitude. But one of Williams carpenters couldn’t resent Salomon, so he tried to kill him by hanging, but William’s overseer prevented him.
After his episode, William decided to sale Salomon, because he wasn’t save at him.
Salomon got sold to a very unkind man named Edwin Epps. He was owner of a cotton plantation, and the slaves were working to pick cotton, but they got beaten if the failed picking at least 200 pound of cotton every day.
