On December 1st, 1955, I was getting ready for work. I got up a bit later than usual, and had to rush so I wouldn’t miss the bus. The bus arrived, and I ran towards the bus stop. I made it, just in time.
I sat down at the white folk’s isle. The bus stopped, and many black people stepped inside. This one black woman chose to sit at the white people’s seat. It was silent for a minute, until a white man broke the silence. “What do you think you’re doing?” The black woman ignored him, staring into the air. He approached her. “Get off that seat. Now.” He said angrily. She looked him in the eyes and said “No”. Everyone stared at eachother. He raised his hand, and slapped her. One of the black men stood up. “Don’t you dare lay another hand on her!” The white man glared at him. “Pfft. I could easily just blame it on you. Everyone would believe the whites.” He said, while chuckling. The black man sat back down, not saying a single word. “That’s what I thought.” The white man continuously slapped the black woman, but she still didn’t get off her seat. He decided to contact the police.
