The government diminished the freedom of the people in Oceania; they didn’t allow them to love anyone more than “Big Brother”. Julia loves Winston. Winston loves Julia. They live in a dark world with no freedom, where they get watched all the time. Can they trust anyone? Can they trust each other? The party has a big role in everyone’s life. Filling every second of the day with their rules and controlling everyone. This shows how much power Big Brother has over the people. Being heartless is the key to survival.
‘’ War is peace.
Freedom is slavery.
Ignorance is strength’’
I think Julia and Winston are keeping their relationship a secret and trying to hide from Big Brother. Because you aren’t allowed to love anyone, more than big brother and the government. Because that means that the individual might favor their loved ones over Big Brother.
‘’Big Brother is watching you’’ shows how much power Big Brother has over the people, as they live in a world with fear.
They had two different views on life; Julia understood things way better than Winston did. Julia’s view on life was that she knew that sooner or later the party members will catch them, and because of that she chooses not to dwell with it. Her only interest is to pursue her desires while Winston is far more realistic about being caught by the party. Winston on the other hand is interested, in the big picture and wants to take down the party for good.
