In 1949, George Orwell wrote a science-fiction novel (1984) that matched terrifyingly accurate with Stalin’s empire. It is about a dystopian world, and sends the reader to an uncomfortable, melancholic place where freedom is absent. Many elements of the Stalin-era Soviet Union feature the novel. The western world now sees those times as a disgrace to Europe, but some say that many aspects of the system that ruled back then, are reflected on the system that controls the world now. Did George Orwell predict something else than what we think he did? Did he predict what is happening today?
The NSA has for a long time kept secrets about the amount of surveillance they use. Private calls are stored in their archives, without any information given to the people whom they have taken it from. It is extreme and unjust behavior, and would, in fact, not have been brought to notice, without a man by the name Edward Snowden.
This man has leaked several documents on the offensive surveillance system. Despite his somewhat heroic actions, he has been charged with several criminal charges such as; Theft of government property, and unauthorized communication of national defense information. These charges have led him to flee from his own country, due to Edward receiving death threats from the government.
