I chose this topic because racism is and always has been an important topic. It ?s not just something we can put on the shelf. Racism is a topic that touches me very much because I think it ?s important everyone is treated equally.
Black America’s history
More than 400 years ago, people from Africa, were imported to the United States against their will to work as slaves. Their only job was to serve the rich whites by fx. working on plantations or on large farms. The slaves lived under poor conditions. They were whipped and did not have rights as citizens, such as the right to vote and an education.
But luckily the declaration of independence found place in 1808, which abolished slavery in the northern states. However, slavery in the southern states were still legal. This was what amongst others lead to the American Civil War between the North and the South. In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which meant that three out of the four million slaves in the USA, were emancipated. It was not until 1865 that slavery finally was made completely illegal in the USA.
The civil rights movements
During the first half of the 20th century the Jim Crow Laws segregated the blacks from the white. At the time the segregation where at its peak, the blacks fx. had worse public toilets and benches than the whites.
