My school recently decided to ban mobile phones. The school claims that it will improve the quality of the lessons and social relationships between the students at our school. Because there is nothing to distract you with notifications and other more tempting things.
Mobile phones are increasingly being used by students as a tool for learning, communication, and research. So, is it still a good idea to ban them if they are also bringing a lot of positive things into the lessons?
I definitely understand why schools choose to ban mobile phones. It means that the children are a lot more focused on each other without the distracting screens. Which improves social interaction. If children do not have the opportunity to use their phones. They are forced to find other things to do which include being together. If the phones are available a lot of children will automatedly take it into use. That traps children in a bubble, that in the long term mean that the social benefits of going to school are not fully achieved. If that is the case, it can lead to loneliness.
Students can be really distracted by cell phones. Phones can cause that they pay less attention to the teacher and the lesson. Students also have a higher chance of getting in trouble if they use cell phones in school rather than if they are not allowed to use their devices in school.
