Apartheid started in South Africa in 1948. Apartheid means that people of different races
were separated and there were large differences based on whether you had a light skin, a
dark skin or even a mixed skin color. The law said that people should be separated by their
race. At that time there was a big difference between white and black people. They had
different rights. People were not allowed to marry across races. For example, if someone
was born as mixed race and had parents with different skin colors, they were looked down
upon. They were at least excluded from society and in the worst cases the child could be
taken away from its parents. This was because both black and white people did not see a
mixed-race person as "one of them."
People with other identities than white were forced to leave their homes and forced to move
to less attractive places. They did not have access to good educations, and it was almost
impossible to find a job, so they could support themselves and their families.
The African National Congress (ANC) was formed to fight against apartheid. They fought for
both black and white people to have rights.
