One Friday morning is a short story about a girl who experiences racism.

The short story is about a girl who is called Nancy Lee, she goes to art class at George Washington High School. She likes her class and her teacher so much. Nancy Lee is a negro American with blood out of Africa. However, she is very proud to consider herself American. She enters an art competition and wins it. However, she is not accepted into the school because she would be the first Black person to attend.

Although she faces racism. Her teacher encourages her to stay hopeful and that one-day, black Americans will be equal to white Americans. “this time to be told that the committee has decided not to give her the scholarship, because she would be the first and only colored girl at the school.” Even though she is the best artist. the school doesn´t accept her due to her skin color. This shows that even very talented African Americans were discriminated against, and weren’t given the same opportunities.

“You know, Miss O’Shay, that part of ‘liberty and justice for all.” This quote shows that Nancy thinks that she didn’t receive the liberty and justice that other Americans receive.
