The PromOf all the magical rites of passage involved in surviving high school, school dances are some of the most important. School dances are a big part of social life in school. They inspire dreams, make people fall in love, and sometimes break hearts. There is the homecoming dance, the winter formal, the Sadie Hawkins dance (girls ask boys to this one,) and then there is the prom. The prom, with its glamour and its fairytale status, is the king of the school dance. The prom is an event worthy of the attention it has garnered from Hollywood through the years. Girls dream about wearing a beautiful prom dress from the moment they enter high school as freshmen, even though most schools only allow seniors to attend.Boys tease each other about who they're going to ask. Girls anxiously hope their crush will ask them. Boys and girls gossip about who is going with whom. The preparation required just to set up an event like the prom is phenomenal! It takes a lot of planning. The decorations, food, and music all have to be arranged. A lot of student and teacher volunteers make it all happen. The prom committee works hard through most of the school year to pick the theme. Then they use the theme as a guide for designing everything from the decorations to the tickets. It’s the committee’s job to get everyone excited for the prom as it approaches (talk about an easy job!) They post fliers, play radio spots, and announce the ticket sale. People are excited about buying their prom tickets. The prom committee also runs the election for prom royalty. Students get to vote for prom king and queen, and the winners will be crowned at the dance.
