During our childhood, most us of get a lot of attention and love from our parents, our family and our friends. And it is well known, that a child who doesn’t experience any sort of love in its childhood doesn’t find it easy to show its own emotions towards other people. I believe the main character in this story is having a very hard time showing her emotions and finding her place in the society, simply because her surroundings doesn’t show her some affections.
The story is written in 1st person and is seen through the eyes of the main character Kim. The story takes place in a very poor environment at homes for lost teenagers in the UK and though it is never said directly, because she doesn’t think that she is having an awful life, we soon become aware of Kim’s position in society. She belongs to the lowest class “after a while I ended up at prospect house, a home for single teenage girls”, but because it never seems to bother her, you can easily be tricked to believe that she is satisfied with her life. Also the fact that she doesn’t even remember the boy who gave her hepatitis Bs name also tells us that she didn’t have any feelings for the boy. I believe that Kim would love if someone took care of her and looked after her. I say that because she likes the attention she gets from Andrea and Di, and also she likes the project worker who she describes as being a mother to them. But it isn’t just positive attention she likes. Fx when she throws the knife at Di, “not to really hurt her, more to see if I could get away with it and I had”. She wants some kind of response to what she has done, which she gets.
