1927 His father dies. An acting chief, Jongintaba Dalindyebo, becomes his guardian and ensures he receives an excellent education
1937 Moves to Healdtown attending the Wesleyan college in Fort Beaufort.
1939 Moves to Johannesburg to escape an arranged marriage. Studies Law at the University of Witwatersrand whilst living in Alexandra
1943 Joins as an activist with the African National Congress (ANC).
1944 Founded the ANC youth league with other young ANC members. Mandela marries Evelyn Mase.
1952 Opened the first black law firm in Johannesburg.
1957 His marriage of 13 years to his first wife Evelyn Ntoko Mase breaks up
1958 Gets married to Nomzamo "Winnie" Madikizela, and eventually have two children.
1960 The goverment banned the ANC.
1961 He builds an army to fight apartheid.
1962 Gets arrested after living on the run for 17 months and is imprisoned in Johannesburg fort. Mandela is sentenced to five years in prison but somehow escapes.
1964 Mandela is captured and convicted for sabotage and treason and sentenced to life imprisonment.
1968 His mother dies and his eldest son is killed in a car crash but he not allowed to attend either of the funerals
1990 Mandela is released from prison after serving for 27 years.
