The text is about a man, experiencing something special in his meantime, while waiting for his train from Philadelphia to Baltimore. He intends to go watch an exhibition of the human heart, but a school class on trip with its teacher, gets his attention. They are watching an attendant with a snake, and the whole purpose with the children watching that, while the attendant is speaking of the non-dangerous grass snake, is for the children to learn that not all snakes are dangerous. The attendant wants the teacher, called Mrs. Aitcheson to hold his snake. It is complete harmless, as the attendant repeats again and again, but the fear of Mrs. Aitcheson is not to be doubted. She is extremely afraid of the snake. The attendant starts off whispering to her that the best way of getting the children not to be afraid of the snake, is to start with the teacher. Already there, a pressure is put on her shoulders. Of course, the teacher feels responsible of her class. While the narrator stands besides it all, watching, the attendant almost forces Aitcheson to carry the snake round her neck. He puts it round her. The poor lady has got the eyes of all the children on her, so she doesn’t protest.
