South Africa is, as you can hear on the name, in the South of the continent Africa, its Capital is Pretoria. Pretoria has around 1.5 million inhabitants, the whole country has around 44 million. It borders on six different countries. In the early 1800, South Africa was an English colony. The South Africans did what the English people told them to do. They didn’t want to, but they had to, because the Englishmen were always carrying guns, and the South Africans only had javelins. So even though the South Africans were in great majority, they couldn’t do anything. In 1910 South Africa became independent.

South Africa is best known for their ‘Apartheid’. Apartheid is when black and white people are being kept apart, by special rules and laws. Like, whites and blacks couldn’t be on the same buses, eat on the same restaurant, or even sit on the same bench. Apartheid was introduced in 1948 in South Africa, by the white National Party government. Of course, not all of the South Africans were satisfied by that. Around 80% of the South African population is black. But if they were protesting, they would be arrested, imprisoned or even shot. Some of the spokesmen were even banned. That means that they can’t talk to a big gathering of people, or even be in the same room with 3 persons.
