At the beginning of the story there is a description of the houses. The storyteller says it's really an evil place where the beasts live wild in the forest and the Devil and witches appear at Halloween. In the graveyard there are no flowers and nothing can grow on the graves but there are votive offerings on the graves. On St John's Eve a child is born with her feet first. A cold winter a girl is sent to her grandmother with oatcakes and other good stuff. She is told to stay on the path and she's given her father's knife and she knows how to use it. The little girl meets a huge wolf but she's steady and cuts a foot of the wolf. The wolf flees and the girl takes the foot with her and proceeds for her grandmother's house, but when she appears the grandmother is laying on the floor, sick. The girl looks at the grandmother's hand and sees it is missing and when she pulls up the wolf's foot it has turned into a hand and the girl starts to cry. The neighbours come towards the house and they kill the grandmother at the edge of the forest, stone her to death and now the girl lives in her grandmother's house.
