The book is about a girl, who lives on a small, beautiful island Tasca, with her mother Catherine, and her father John Lee. The girl’s name is Marianne, and she is eighteen years old, and she doesn’t have a boyfriend. She likes painting, but she wouldn’t sell her pictures, because she doesn’t think people will buy them, and her father thinks her pictures are stupid. Marianne works in a factory, she put fish in tins. Marianne often has dreams, when she paints her pictures about the mainland.
A Sunday when Marianne is painting near the sea, she suddenly hears a voice behind her. That is a handsome young man, whos name is David Bart. He is on holiday on Tasca, for two months. David works for a big oil company, in Malapa. David lives on the mainland.
David shows Marianne an oil rig, on the sea, with a pair of field glasses. They were often together after that. They walk beside the sea, hand in hand, while they talk about anything.
One Sunday morning there come a very well-dressed man, in to the ‘’family Lee’s’’ house. He comes from the mainland. The man will buy theirs house and land. He wants a quiet place to live. He will give a good price for the land. But John and Catherine couldn’t answer the well-dressed man at once.
