The book is about 4 boys, Chris, Gordon, Teddy and Vern.
They are friends, and have been in a long time. They are 13 years old, and have already started a gang. Vern was under the terrace, when he heard his brother talked about a missing boy named Ray Brower they had found dead, along the railway. Vern goes up in the tree house to tell his friends what he had heard. The boys decide quickly to look for the body, so they can get in the news paper.
The boys are going to tell their parents that they are sleeping over at each other, and then sneak out to find the body. Chris takes his dads gun with him because of the dangerous animals in the Forrest. They are during many daring things on the trip, like running from a train, running away from a dog, walking over a railway bridge, but finally the boys finds the body.
The older gang with Vern’s brother in it has reached them by driving in a car, they also wants to get in the news papers for finding the body. The young gang is mad because they found the body first and they went through a lot of suffering, and the old gang is mad because the young found it first and won’t leave. Chris points at the leader of the old gang with the gun, and the leader gets threatened by Chris and runs away with the rest of the gang.
