The book is about two brothers who live in Soweto. Soweto is a name of a town in South Africa which is an enormous ghetto for black people like themselves. The names of the two brothers are Marcus and John. They went together to the same school when they where fourteen years old. It was a school for black children only. The classes were big , sometimes thirty or forty children. It was hard to learn and concentrate. There were not enough books and the classrooms were very old and small. Marcus and John liked to learn, but they didn?t like their school. John was sorry for his best friend Sara who was killed by soldiers and he was fed up school. So Marcus said to him: ?We have to work hard John. We have to get good exam results, and a good job?, But John just said that the good jobs are for the whites.
