In modern society it is an increasing desire to put people into boxes according to their background, appearance, profession etc. But one thing is to possess the skills and another thing is to actually be that type of person. That’s a factor people around you rarely remember. If you have the gear to look like a million then people around you quickly put you into the box containing the rich even though you could have stolen all the clothes. On the whole you could pretend to be someone else and people would not recognize it because more and more persuades another and often superficial sort of rate-box than the box they were born into. This is some of the themes in the short story The Web, written by the author Frances King.

The story takes place around the area Kensington High Street which is in the central London and considered as a very posh and exclusive district. Here we meet the main character who a young woman called Liz. Liz can be characterized as a well-dressed and intelligent woman. She would be suited for a good position with a good income, but probably without love in life. In short she is a typical career woman, last but not least a woman of strong character. Therefore it is not a problem for her to use a condescending vowel towards the blind huddled man and his dog. Especially since she knows he is not really blind or homeless. A quotation which responds that is where Liz a second time meets the homeless guy and comments on his piece of cardboard saying “STARVING. PLEASE HELP”:
