Charles Bokowski’s Son of Satan takes place in the USA. In the story we meet three boys, who beat up another boy because he is lying. The story is told in 1st person. I will make a characterization of the narrator of the story.
The narrator is an eleven-year-old boy. We are introduced to two of his friends, named Hass and Morgan. The three boys are using a very bad language. For example the two first sentences we are hearing from the narrator: “Shit” and “We gotta get that son of a bitch” (p. 39, l. 4 & 8). Although he is the youngest of the boys, he still feels like the leader. “But I was the young leader. I couldn’t show any sympathy” (p. 40, l. 33). The narrator has a pressure on his shoulder, provided by the older boys of his “gang”. He feels like letting Simpson go, but he cannot because he is afraid of Hass and Morgan’s reactions. Later when Morgan thinks it is a bad idea hanging Simpson, the narrator just yells: “This man is guilty” (p. 42, l. 29). When they have left Simpson alone, hung up, he after all shows some sympathy and comes back and releases Simpson. When the narrator’s father finds out about it, he wants to talk to the narrator. The narrator is going to get beaten up. He rolls under his bed, and laughs. He laughs because he thinks that perhaps Simpson was telling the truth, and that their bad reason for beating him, after all was not even a reason.
