Political apartheid is abolished, but the economical apartheid still lives on. Even though there have been some steps forward, most of the black people still lives in poverty.
Take a drive through a random city in South Africa and you will notice that the city is divided in two. There is the “white” city with big houses, satellite dishes on the roof, swimming pools in the gardens and German quality cars in asphalted entrance. Not long from there is the “black” city with worn out houses and sheds made of tin.
Every morning walks the black people into the white city, to work as servants – like they always have done. Although South Africa’s apartheid regime is replaced by a nation that proudly has named it self “the rainbow nation”, and the president is Mbeki in stead of De Klerk, it haven’t changed. The city is a picture of the South Africa that Apartheid left. A country in which the economical apartheid still exists. The president Thabo Mbeki said that South Africa has two nations, a rich white and a poor black.
But something is changing. Just take an extra look on the apartheid city. Not far from the black sheds, a new group of small houses have begun to be build. That’s visible signs of social changes, in the new South Africa.
