In the text we hear about 5 characters, two children, one woman and two men. One of the men is called Morton and we don’t know the name of the other man, but we hear that he is very tall and big.
It is obvious that Morton is from an upper social class.
Morton is working at the university, he is city-pale, he wears glasses and he reads “Times Magazine.” This tells us something about his social status. He has a good education and he works hard. He is a good man, who does not want to fight.
The other man is described as the opposite of Morton. He reads comics, he is fat and the spat drips from his mouth. He does not speak decently to other people. An example is, “”Aw, shut up,” said the man.” (l. 70). Therefore I think that he is from the lower social class.
This finds also expression in his child’s behavior. The child of the big man, is badly brought up, so he has not learned that it is not okay to throw sand on other people. In the situation, where the badly brought up child throws sand at the child of Morton and the woman, the child begins to cry instead of getting angry and beating the stupid child. This also shows that the child from the upper class family is well brought up.
