In the short story “Sunday in the park” by Bel Kaufmann it takes place in a park, to be more specific it takes place at a playground inside the park. Here the storyteller enjoys a quiet afternoon together with her husband and tree-year-old son Larry who is playing in the sandbox. Then suddenly another boy throws sand at Larry, then Larry’s mother tries to make the boy stop but she can’t. She is high class and a perfectionist who wants a romantic family and a perfect Sunday. The other boys father encourages his son to keep on throwing sand if that’s what he wants to do “you go right ahead joe, he said loudly. Throw all you want. This is a public sandbox” (page 2, line 47-48. The conflict is getting bigger then the father of Larry asks the other boys father to relax.

The reader is presented with the conflict between two families with two very different meanings about the society. The problem is that they come from to different places so small problems as throwing at each other will be a big problem. The text also knows how different right to one person can be wrong to another, and how to solve a conflict. But when Morton turns his back and “gives up” and they have to drag Larry all the way out of the park, and they finally get outside, the mother seems extremely dissatisfied with Morton (page 4, line 10-15) she tells that is he had to do something more than this episode. There is something wrong in the relationship. It’s not working very well for them, there is always problems between them. Maybe deep inside her she wants a real man and is frustrated that Morton won’t fight for her and protect the family.
