The movie and the book titled “Dead Poets Society“is about a group of boys and their club called “Dead Poets Society“. The story takes place in Welton Academy where the boys are studying. Welton Academy is founded on tradition and excellence and is bent on providing strict structured lessons. The school is for boys only. The school is very strict and disciplinary and most of the students are probably to become doctors or lawyers.

We follow seven boys and their encounter with the school and with their new poetry and English teacher Mr. Keating. Mr. Keating graduated from Welton Academy and now teaches at the same place. He is not like any other teacher. He is more creative and inspiring and makes the students feel that education is fun. He makes them step unto their tables so they can get another perspective on thing, throw balls, write poems and take strolls. He inspires the boys to seize the day (Carpe Diem) and he encourages his students to “Make their lives extraordinary”, which is repeated in several times in the book.

The story is mostly viewed through the eyes of Todd Anderson and his roommate Neil Perry. Todd is very shy and terrified that what he might say is insignificant and meaningless. His family has big expectations to him, because his brother had the best grades when he graduated. His parents also send him the same present for his birthday each year. Todd does not seem very secure of himself. Todd is actually a very good poet with a lot of potential.Neil, on the other hand, is bright and has passion is acting. But his father dictates every detail of his son's life including extra curricular activities, future plans, and specifically what others think of him. His father wants him to complete his dreams, because he also wanted to be a doctor but his family didn’t have the opportunities. Therefore he doesn’t allow Neil whether to work for the newspaper or do acting.
