In the following essay, I have comment the theme, and made a characterization of the main character Sandra. Who is she like? And which experience does she make?
The story is told from Sandra's viewpoint. But it is written in the third person.
The most obvious theme in this story is the contrast between appearance and reality: how things seem and how things are. It is both literally, light and darkness, the sunshine in which Sandra walks, the darkness of the wood. And here is also a metaphorical contrast between good and evil. The title of the story is also interesting here. At first the darkness seems a simple metaphor for the unknown evil in Packer's End. But at the end of the story, the evil has become known. The darkness is not the evil outside in the wood. It is “inside” in the world of human experience. This is the in right the maim character, Sandra, makes during the story.
Sandra is the first character we meet. We first see Sandra walking through flowers. There are lists of plants and birds, and she is daydreaming about her future, where she expects to be a secretary and make her own clothes, and she dreams of having her own sewing machine. She is very girl-like, and seems in experienced.
