Rain Man is about a man, Charlie Babbitt, whose daddy, Sanford Babbitt, dies. Sanford was very rich, and Charlie expects to inherit his money, $3 million, but because Charlie and Sanford didn’t like each other that much, Charlie only got his car, a Buick Roadmaster convertible, and several rose bushes. Charlie got very angry, and wanted to know who then would get the $3 million, but Mr. Mooney, who was Sanford’s lawyer, couldn’t tell him.
Then Charlie went to a bank in Cincinnati and got the information that his father’s money would go to a place called Wallbrook, which is a mental institute. Charlie and his girlfriend Susanna headed for Wallbrook. When they arrived Charlie talked to Dr. Bruner, but he still couldn’t get an answer as to who would get his father’s money.
When he left Dr. Bruner and got back to his car, an autistic guy was sitting inside. The guy knew everything about the car; how old it was, how many miles it had on it, and so on. He also mentioned that his father’s name was Sanford Babbitt.
Charlie couldn’t understand how the autistic guy knew all that about him, so he asked Dr. Bruner and found out that his name was Raymond, and that he was his brother. Charlie was very surprised, but also very angry because no one ever told him about him.
