Karakteristik af Hallam Foe

Hallam Foe is a boy at the age of 17. He lives at an estate with his father and stepmother (Verity). The first Hallam Foe we meet is a skinny boy with long creasy dark hair that covers his brown eyes. He sweat and his hand is shaking while he spies and describes in his diary while two people having sex … This is the first meeting, which describe Hallam very well; creepy, scary and nervous.

Hallam is a very lonely boy; he has nobody to talk to. He is also 17 years old, which is a very difficult age. He starts to be attracted of women and starts to be a man. But he cannot move on, because he is still a little boy inside. His sister has just moved out and he does not talk with his father or Verity. So he becomes sort of mentally confused, because he does not know who he is and he cannot tell his problems to anyone. That is one of the reasons why he likes to spy on people; it is a kind of hiding place from the world. He looks at other people’s lives, instead of looking at his own, because he has so many problems. He tries to run away from his own life. He also likes to sneak around in their houses. Hallam’s mother committed suicide when he was 14 years old, which is the main problem in his life. He cannot recover from the loss. He feels that his mother has left him, so to recover from the loss he blames Verity. He needs an excuse as to why she died, so he makes himself believe that Verity killed his mother, only because Verity wants to exploit Hallam’s father and the money he has. His father and stepmother want him to move out, like his sister did, but he does not want to move out. He hates his stepmother so badly, that he wants to annoy her as much as possible, but still he is attracted by Verity. So when Hallam has sex with Verity, his desire there takes over. For a short moment he feels that he is loved by someone. Verity uses it to force him to move out, but then he just becomes angrier at her. When he comes to Edinburgh, he sees a woman that reminds him of his mother (Kate). Hallam trusts Kate, because he sees his mother in her; he feels safe around her. He is forced to face his past if he wants to keep Kate. He tells the truth standing naked in front of her, which makes him vulnerable. This is a very important moment in his life because he is confronting his past. He finally talks to somebody about his past and problems. Afterwards he goes back home because all the old memories come back to him. Now he wants revenge, but when he throws Vanity into the lake, he regrets. He regrets because he is finally faces the truth. He knows that this is not worth killing for. He realizes that he cross the line and it is time to let go at his mother, before it is too late and he becomes a murderer. When he comes back Kate has another man, but he is not sad. He knows that is time to let go and start a new beginning. We leave him, walking on the street smiling, ready to be a man.
