In 1853 David Livingstone traveled to Zambia, that was the reason why England started to show interest in Zambia.

The king of the Lozi tribe, Lewanika, made a deal with the leader of the british south African company, that they could use workers and resources from the area. The leader of the company Cecil Rhodes took over the entire area by force. He made a new country which he named after himself : Rhodesia. In 1911 the country was then divided in two, North Rhodesia (now Zambia) and South Rhodesia(now Zimbabwe).

In 1924 the country became a colony under the british crown. It became one of the largest copper producers in the world. All power was divided among the very few white people. Labor unions was strickly forbidden. But the natives formed their own unions called the welfare-unions. These unions were very active in the fight against the colonisation.

The country got independence in 1964 and changed the name to Zambia.
