Imagine that you couldn’t use your telephone, computer, television, car or any other kinds of electricity. It’s unbelievable to live like that isn’t it? Some people choose that way, and one of them is the Amish. We have to go back in the 16th century where a people called Mennonites lived in Switzerland. They were Christians and believed in god. They allowed some modern things in their culture, so their life would be easier. In the 17th some of the Mennonites thought modern things were wrong. One of them was Jacob Amman. He was the leader of those who didn’t want all these modern things in their culture. These people got the name Amish, by Jacob Amman, and wanted to live like they meant, god wanted them to live. Jacob Amman meant that the Mennonites had betrayed god and none of them would go to paradise. Then the Amish people were no longer welcome in Switzerland, so they had to move to Germany, but the Germans didn’t like them either. William Penn invited the Amish to USA, to settle Lancaster County. The Amish speaks Pennsylvania Dutch that is a kind of German and English mixed together. Today there are about 180.000 Amish people and the Amish people keep growing.
