Clothes are written by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. The story is about arranged marriage. The Indian girl Sumita are getting married to a young Indian man Somesh, who lives in the USA. She is not only getting married to a man she does not know, but she also have to move to another country and leave her friends and family behind.
In the beginning Sumita is very nervous about the marriage and she is very sad that she have to leave all that she likes about India, but she know that she have to do it, that’s how she was brought up. She decides to be positive and curious about the marriage and her husband. Every day when Somesh gets home he tells Sumita about his day at the 7-elleven, she really loves all about it and wants to be there with him. Through his stories and the gifts he brings home to her, she finds out that he is in love with her. He buys her jeans and t-shirts which is very far from the traditional clothing in Indian. When she wears the clothes she is feeling beautiful and free. (pp. 177 ll.18-23) (pp. 177 ll.27-29).Somesh is also trying to convince her to get an education, because he wants her to be more than just his wife. The story ends very tragic. Somesh is killed while he is working, before they have achieved any of their shared dreams. Of course Sumita is very sad, but she has evolved into an independent and determined woman. Sumita realizes that she have to stay in USA and catch the possibilities that Somesh has shown her. She wants to live her life! “That’s when I know I cannot go back. I don’t know yet how I’ll manage here in this new dangerous land. I only know I must. Because all over India, at this very moment, widows in white saris are bowing their veiled heads, serving tea to in-laws. Doves with cut-off wings. (pp.182 ll.34-38)
