Nothing is perfect, and neither is the world of Sumita. The short story Clothes by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni it’s all about arranged marriage, love and destiny. The story isn’t an imaginary world, it’s the real stuff. We all know that arranged marriages can be bad, but sometimes destiny decides it to be love. And this case it’s a success! The man, whom Sumita is getting married too, is from USA. Sumita moves to the land of possibilities, but unfortunately Sumita’s husband gets killed. Sumita decides to stay in the states and live her life in the free country. We hear everything that happens through Sumita, she is the first person narrator of the story, we never hear a conversation without her presence, and we never hear from other perspectives but hers. The theme in the text is arranged marriage, but we could also make arguments of other themes to be the headtheme, like “development, from girl to woman”, but I chose arranged marriages, because without the deal to marry the guy from USA, she would never have been forced to develop, and she would probably still cooking and washing in India if it wasn’t for arranged marriages.
The place of action starts in India, but later on we move to USA and stays there till the end. For Sumita India is this whole safety point, she got her friends who she have known her whole life. The environment in USA is new, people speak different, people look different, and things are just different. And that could maybe be a little harsh for an Indian girl in the states. I think the atmosphere changes when she moves to USA, but it’s hard to say what it is. It just feels different.
