Analyse af novellen 'The Dress'

The story is organized with clear cuts where every subparagraph starts. When a real new paragraph starts, there are no cut, but the story skips a big part which is several ours in the story. Direct speech is used a lot in the text; which makes it pleasant to read, but hard to understand. Every direct speech is written with a cut so that it is even clearer that it is direct speech. It is building an excitement that tops at the end at page 11.

The story is full of beautiful sentences, which are often symbolizing the mood in the particular situation. For an example this sentence at line 4 at the start: “The silence held its breath”. That line expresses both complete silence and fear. In line 31 - “Flora was wearing the dress. It felt delicious, like water” – it is clear that the dress felt comfortable. The expression of that the dress felt delicious, like water, may for some seem like an odd way to explain the feelings with the dress, but for other people, that expression is different and passionate in a combination of clothes and water. Of course it is meant in a symbolic way, and by that you have to guess what “delicious” and “water” symbolises in the sentence.
