Analyse af novellen 'The Dress'

The short story begins with, Rachel assuming her sister Flora stole her dress and went out. Rachel had planned to wear the dress to their mothers fortieth birthday when they would go out for dinner in the evening. She sits at home, angry at Flora for taking her new light green colored dress. At the same time, Flora is wearing the dress outside. She feels elegant and tall like her sister Rachel who was all those things. She wanted the dress ever since Rachel brought it home and pulled it out of her carrier bag, and for the first time she had the chance to take something from Rachel’s room, because Rachel always locked her door. Rachel ends up wearing a black dress to dinner. She and her mother are sitting at the restaurant, and after a while Flora shows up, but she is not wearing the dress. Both daughters don’t want to make a scene and ruin their mothers birthday, so they keep quiet for a while. Rachel seems angry, so eventually her mother notices, and finds out about the stolen dress. They continue eating but takes up the discussion when they come home. Rachel decides to leave, and live with her dad for a while.
